The tracking of assets in the supply chain has already received considerable interest, thanks in large part to the Wal-Mart Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) mandate, but truly implementable solutions that can seamlessly and cost-effectively track assets through the supply chain as the assets change hands remain elusive due to the complexity of information integration needed. Meanwhile, many companies are becoming interested in simple asset tracking solutions that can help track critical or valuable assets within a specific physical area or process under the company's control. Asset tracking enables organizations to know exactly what assets they own, lease, or control, as well as how those assets are being used throughout their life cycles, from acquisition all the way through disposal.

Over the last 20 years the retail industry has consistently innovated to drive sales, creating new store formats, new services and new ways to communicate with consumers.
