It is full of fascinating details and praise for people who contributed to the innovations and developments in the area of computer technology. Goldstine, a fine scientist and technology manager in his field starts with historic contributions of Wilhelm Schickard, Blaise Pascal and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, then he explains the contributions of scientists and early computer technology experts in the 19th century, e.g. Maxwell and Boole, Charles Babbage combined with critical remarks about his performance, analog computing instruments - forerunners of digital computers - etc. etc. In chapter 8 he explains the fruitful cooperation of Herman Hollerith with Dr. Billings to automate the USA census in 1890, the beginning of Hollerith's success with his Tabulating Machine Company (TMC) which was merged into Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation on June 16th, 1911, the forerunner of IBM under the leadership of Thomas Watson Sr. Chapter 10 is dedicated to Bush's Differential Analyzer and Other Analog Devices. In Part Two we read about the very important Wartime Developments: ENIAC and EDVAC when John von Neumann contributed significantly to the development of the EDVAC by Eckert and Mauchly. In Part Three Goldstine describes "The von Neumann Machine" and the development work at the Institute for Advanced Study and "The Early Industrial Scene" with focus on UNIVAC, IBM, Burroughs, etc. He emphasizes "In my opinion it was Thomas Watson, Jr. who played the key role in moving IBM into the electronic computer field." Despite the fact that there are excellent books available describing the time "Before the Computer" by Cortada, and the Computer History by Ceruzzi, Campbell-Kelly and Aspray, Alfred D. Chandler, Emerson Pugh etc. etc. it his highly recommendable to study this work of the computer expert Goldstine who provides an authoritative insight into the field of computer developm

Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint I by Felix Klein 1932

This is the English translation of the first volume of the three-volume-series of Felix Klein's “Elementar-mathematik vom höheren Standpunkte aus" published in 1932. Two serious mistakes of this translation pinpointed in the preface to the 2016 translation: 1. the misleading translation of the term “höher” in that English translation of the 1930's... The term higher is not only a more literal translation of höheren than advanced is, but it also captures better the image Klein had for his work. Advanced can mean higher, but its connotation is more like ‘more developed’ or ‘further along in space and time’. Klein wanted to emphasize that his courses would give prospective teachers a better, more panoramic view of the landscape of mathematics. As noted above, he wanted those teachers to ‘stand above’ their subject. 2. At too many places, the text gives not the intended meaning, but rather erroneous and misleading translations, in particular with regard to mathematics, not only with regard to the general style.

The evolution of physics by Einstein and Infeld 1938

Downloaded from archive.org. It is a science book for the lay reader, by Albert Einstein and Leopold Infeld, tracing the development of ideas in physics. Albert Einstein pushed his realist approach to physics in defiance of much of quantum mechanics. Belief in an “objective reality,” the book argued, had led to great scientific advances throughout the ages, thus proving that it was a useful concept even if not provable. “Without the belief that it is possible to grasp reality with our theoretical constructions, without the belief in the inner harmony of our world, there could be no science,” the book declared. "This belief is and always will remain the fundamental motive for all scientific creation.” In addition, Einstein used the text to defend the utility of field theories amid the advances of quantum mechanics. The best way to do that was to view particles not as independent objects but as a special manifestation of the field itself: "Could we not reject the concept of matter and build a pure field physics? We could regard matter as the regions in space where the field is extremely strong. A thrown stone is, from this point of view, a changing field in which the states of the greatest field intensity travel through space with the velocity of the stone."

Methods of Mathematical Physics Vol I 1937

comment copied from amazon 2001: I brought this book ( volume 2 also as well ) because of its " fame ", but when I read it, it has several draw backs. First, may be the original version is in German, so even with good translation, it seem does not fit in the usual English style we get used to. Also the topics it choose is too few and also the area covered is too narrow and not well co-ordinated. For example, the whole volume I is almost dedicated to Calculus of variation only. In volume 2, the whole book is dedicated to differential equations. But that is not the greatest drawback. The most bad point is that the book just presents formulae after formulae, equations after equations, without giving examples of how to use it, and also no exercise for me to practice.
